The first thing I think of when the weather gets cooler… is apples! Apple cider, picking apples, apple pie, apple chips, and of course CARAMEL APPLES!!
And why not add chocolate and nut toppings to make them even tastier!?
Here’s our recipe for homemade caramel apples!
Recipe adapted from punchbowl.com
• How ever many apples you want to save to eat, or give as a gift.
Pick your favorite kind! Our favorites are the Honeycrisp ones!
(they’re so sweet and juicy!)
• 1 cup butter
• 2 cups dark brown sugar
• 1 cup light corn syrup
• 14 ounces sweetened condensed milk
• 2 ½ tsp. vanilla extract
• Yummy toppings, or your favorite chocolate candies
Insert wooden sticks through the tops of the apples so that the stick is about 3/4 the way in the apple. Combine the butter, sugar, corn syrup and condensed milk in sauce pan and put on high heat. Bring the mixture to a boil for about 35 minutes. Do not stir the caramel until it is dark and thick. Remove the mixture from the heat and stir in the vanilla extract. Dip the apples into the caramel at an angle. Raise the apple out of the caramel, vertically, and let the caramel drip off of the apple. Hold the stick in your hand, with the apple side up and allow the caramel to settle on the apple. Line the apples up on a greased wax paper. Decorate the apples before they dry completely. (This is the key for making sure your toppings will stick to the sides of the apple!) You can make Halloween caramel apples with Halloween candy, or you can decorate the caramel apples with your favorite chocolate candies, any kind of nuts chopped up, or even a chocolate drizzle!
